Wood Engraving & Laser Cutting
Wood is a versatile material for high-quality engraving, precise laser cutting and individual design projects. Solid wood, real wood veneer and plywood are suitable for professional applications in sign making, advertising technology, model making as well as gifts, jewellery and decorative products.
Natural Material for Individual Laser Projects
The natural grain makes every workpiece unique. Depending on the wood species, construction and surface, light, subtle or rich wood tones can be achieved for both functional and decorative applications.
INNOGRAV offers solid wood and real wood veneer in different wood species, formats and material thicknesses. Depending on the version, the materials can be laser engraved, laser cut, processed with CNC machines or milled.
Our Material Recommendations for Wood Engraving & Laser Cutting
Different wood constructions are available depending on the application. Solid wood offers a particularly natural material appearance, while veneer panels provide a consistent structure that is well suited for precise laser processing.
Solid Wood
Solid wood is ideal for high-quality applications where the natural material appearance is especially important. The finely sanded and oiled panels are designed for laser processing.
- Natural, high-quality wood appearance
- Suitable for laser engraving and laser cutting
- Finely sanded, matt surface
- Depending on the format, made from one piece or with only a few slats
- Wood species such as maple, oak, alder, cherry and walnut
Real Wood Veneer with HDF Core
Real wood veneer with a homogeneous HDF core combines a natural real wood surface with a consistent and dimensionally stable panel construction. It is specially suited for precise laser processing.
- Real wood veneer on both sides
- Homogeneous HDF core
- 3 mm material thickness
- Low smoke residue and little cleaning effort
- Maple, birch, oak, alder, cherry and walnut
Real Wood Veneer with Plywood Core
Multilayer real wood veneer with a plywood core combines natural surfaces with high stability and rigidity. The untreated surface provides additional options for individual finishing and further processing.
- Stable multilayer construction
- Natural real wood surface
- Different material thicknesses depending on the version
- Suitable for laser, CNC and milling
- For signs, models and individual products
Poplar Plywood
Poplar plywood is an economical solution for laser engraving, painting and individual design. Its untreated surface can be finished in many different ways after processing.
- Plywood made from poplar wood
- 3 mm material thickness
- 600 x 300 mm format
- Low smoke emission during laser processing
- Suitable for laser engraving, CNC and milling
Which Wood Is Suitable for Which Application?
| Application | Recommendation | Key Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| High-quality wooden signs | Solid wood / real wood veneer | Natural grain and high-quality material appearance |
| Fine laser engravings & logos | HDF real wood veneer | Homogeneous structure for precise detailed engravings |
| Fine laser cutting | Solid wood / HDF real wood veneer | Suitable for fine contours, ornaments and lettering |
| Jewellery & small pendants | Small solid wood panels | Available from one piece of wood without slats or glue joints |
| Model making & constructions | Real wood veneer with plywood core / poplar plywood | Stable construction and precise processing options |
| Decorations & gifts | Solid wood / real wood veneer | Individual grain and a wide choice of wood species |
| Custom finishing & painting | Poplar plywood / untreated real wood veneer | Untreated surface for subsequent finishing |
What Should Be Considered When Engraving and Laser Cutting Wood?
Wood Species & Grain
Maple, birch, oak, alder, cherry and walnut differ significantly in colour and grain. As wood is a natural material, colour and structure can vary within the same wood species.
Laser Engraving & Laser Cutting
Depending on the material, text, logos, graphics and fine patterns can be engraved or individual contours can be cut from the panel. The material construction influences the cut edge, level of detail and cleaning effort.
Material Construction
Solid wood provides maximum natural character. Veneer panels combine a real wood surface with a consistent core, providing good dimensional stability and repeatable processing results.
Surface Treatment
Oiled surfaces are already finished to a high standard. Untreated veneer and plywood surfaces can be painted, oiled or otherwise finished after processing.
Storage
Wood should be stored in a cool, dry place protected from moisture. Incorrect storage can cause material warping, particularly with thin panels.
Extraction & Safety
Laser and milling processes generate dust, smoke and fumes. Adequate room ventilation and a suitable local extraction system should therefore be provided in the processing area.
Solid Wood and Real Wood Veneer for Professional Laser Projects
From light maple and oak to cherry and dark walnut, different wood species are available for individual designs. Solid wood is especially suitable for high-quality one-off pieces, signs and jewellery, while real wood veneer offers advantages for precise and repeatable laser processing thanks to its consistent panel construction.
Tips for Laser Engraving and Material Processing
The optimum settings depend on the wood species, material thickness, machine power and desired result. Before series production, a test should therefore be carried out to assess engraving contrast, cutting quality and possible smoke residue.
