Are magnetic clips for name badges harmless?
Carrying small permanent magnets near the body, for instance as magnet clips for name tags, is generally harmless. These applications represent a very locally limited exposure to weak static magnetic fields. When such magnet clips are used normally, the known biological thresholds are in no way reached. However, interference to some heart pacemakers by small magnetic fields cannot be ruled out. From around 1 mT magnetic flux density, interference to, say, magnetic cards, credit cards and watches is also conceivable. We do not, therefore, recommend that name tags be worn right over implanted heart pacemakers nor that sensitive magnetic cards be kept in jacket pockets.
